How does this affect me?
The growth of technology continues to have a massive impact throughout modern society. Its effects appear to be nearly unavoidable. The extent that it should be incorporated in the classroom is a significant question that all teachers will eventually have to grapple with. Such a complex question has often generated polarizing debate for years. The response however, doesn’t have to be a resounding no or an absolute yes. This website will cover several of the intended and unintended effects of technology, how it affects mental development, strategies for it to be effectively utilized, and strategies to create more responsible engagement. We do not claim to have found a definite answer to the inquiry question. However, it is believed that in exploring several of the features surrounding technology in the classroom one will be better informed on how it might be most responsibly integrated.
As a teacher, to what extent will you incorporate technology into your own classroom? How will you ensure that it is being most effectively utilized? |
Preconceived notions?
Arguments in favor of technology in the classroom:
-Children may be more motivated and interested in lessons where technology is used as a teaching tool. -Exposing children to technology early prepares them for college and the workforce where this area of knowledge is essential. -Technology raises connections between people and information, no matter where they are in the world, giving students access to nearly limitless resources. Arguments against technology in the classroom: -Teachers are one of the most important factors in a student’s development and ability to succeed. -There is a level of interaction through an active classroom discussion that can’t be replicated -Students need to learn how to socialize without technology. It’s often through engagement with teachers that children learn valuable life lessons such as respect, manners and self-esteem. -Online videos and programs don’t compare to classroom discussions where students can ask questions and hear the opinions of their peers and teachers. It is our preconceived notion that technology should not be used purely for the sake of “using technology.” Instead it should be applied to cases where it can provide a meaningful impact on the subject matter. It also does not magically make average teachers better. If anything, it can play a role in highlighting certain flaws in a teacher’s instruction. However, with careful considerations there is a time and a place for the incorporation of technology. The arguments in favor of and against technology are legitimate however they must be properly balanced. When effectively incorporated, technology can be an extremely beneficial asset to employ in the classroom. However, it is important for teachers to be careful when doing so. |
